Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 & 10.1 Update

TabletConnect has not reported much on the next generation Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets.  With a press release launched this morning, we are providing some details.  There will be two versions: 8.9 & 10.1 which of course refers to the size.  The WiFi version of the 10.1 will launch on June 8th.  Pricing is as follows:
  • 16GB WiFi, $499
  • 32GB WiFi, $599
The two Galaxy Tabs will sport Android Honeycomb and will have dual-core processor (no confirmation if Tegra2).  However, unlike the Motorola Xoom, Samsung is adding its own skin called TouchWix 4.0.  So one will not have a pure Android Honeycomb experience.

Update: Samsung Galaxy Tab II Will Sport 10.1" Screen

UPDATE: Samsung released the specs today at the MWC.  They confirmed 1GHz Tegra 2 dual core processor.  The tablet will be known as Galaxy Tab 10.1 not Galaxy Tab II.  It will sport dual cameras (8MP rear & 2MP front).  All Google apps will be included just like the original Galaxy Tab.  Of course, no word on pricing nor availability although Samsung stated it will be launching in March in Asia & Europe.

Samsung will be announcing that the successor to the Galaxy Tab will sport a 10.1" screen and Honeycomb (Android 3.0).  The resolution will be 1280x800 which actually is the same as Motorola's Xoom tablet.  Unknown is the exact processor.  What is known is that there will be no Samsung skin sitting on top of stock Android 3.0.  From what we have seen and the fact that Honeycomb is designed for tablets, there is no need to put a custom skin on top of Honeycomb.  Hope other manufacturers will follow suit.  Further details will be announced this Sunday at the Mobile World Congress 2011.

Verizon To Reduce Samung Galaxy Tab Price To $499

According to Droid-Life, Verizon will be reducing the price of the Galaxy Tab to $499 (with no contract).  In addition, Verizon will be throwing in $60 worth of movie rentals through Blockbuster or Media Hub.  In order to ease concerns for those who already bought a Galaxy Tab before the price drop, Verizon will issue a credit to those who purchased one 14 days before the price drop.  At $499, we still believe the price is too high.  At $399, it starts to be competitive.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Release Dates, Carriers & Pricing

With multiple carriers releasing the Samsung Galaxy Tab, I think it would be helpful to consumers to have a cheat sheet of who is offering what. See further below:

Samsung Galaxy Tab: First Impressions

I had the rare opportunity to actually play around with a Samsung Galaxy Tab at an Engadget Reader Meetup (which is like a mini-tech expo) last Thursday night.  Samsung had a table there showcasing their Galaxy S phones plus their Galaxy Tab.  It was the most popular table at the expo.  Samsung was limiting the usuage to about 2-3 minutes per person so my first impressions are only based on the very limited time.  So what did I think?

Samsung Galaxy Tab Goes On Sale Nov. 11 at Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless and Samsung have announced that the Galaxy Tab will go on sale November 11 for $599.99.  Unfortunately, no subsidized pricing will be available.  Rumors had it that carriers will offered a subsidized pricing of about $300 with a 2 year contract.  Verizon will offer a data plan starting at $20/month for 1GB.  Press Release after the break.

Rumors Regarding Samsung Galaxy Tab's Pricing

TmoNews is reporting that they received a screenshot of an ad that shows that the Galaxy Tab will cost $399 with a 2 year contract.  We have been hearing many things about the Galaxy Tab except for pricing and release date.  Now, it appears that the pricing will be $399 after $50 MIR & 2 year contract or $650 without a contract.  This appears to fall within range of an earlier rumor that Sprint will offer the tablet for $399 with a 2 year contract and $599 without.  On the Sprint rumor, the Galaxy Tab is to be released on November 14th.  Of course, this is just a rumor.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Updates

Just some updates regarding the yet to be released Samsung Galaxy Tab.  First, there will be no telephone capability which the European version will have.  There are some points for and against this.  However, we cannot really see people using this as a phone even with a Bluetooth earpiece.  Imagine making a call on a tablet.  Its not as easy as pulling out a phone.  Second update, a WiFi version will be coming out in the future (of course, no timeline is given).  It is key that this version is priced correctly.  Anything above $600 would be difficult to have strong sales.

Samsung Galaxy Tab to Come to Verizon, AT&T and Sprint

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung has cut deals with Verizon, AT&T and Sprint to carry its Galaxy Tab tablet.  If Samsung really intends to take on Apple's iPad, they are smart to leverage the three largest wireless providers.  Price is still unknown but should vary depending on the subsidies that the cellular providers will offer.  Samsung product executive Hankil Yoon said in an interview last week that the Galaxy Tab would likely retail for between $200 and $300.

Samsung Galaxy Tab: News Update

Boy Genius Report is reporting that the Galaxy Tab could be coming to Sprint this November.  This would be available in both 3G & 4G.  Since Sprint & Verizon both use CDMA, this should not be a surprised to see both carriers carry the Galaxy Tab.

Based on the specs and some initial videos of the Galaxy Tab, it looks like a winner.  We could have our first top tier Android tablet.  However, there is a concern as to whether the Galaxy Tab can succeed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Press Release

Update (09/05/10) - Wall Street Journal has stated that "Samsung product executive Hankil Yoon said it would likely retail for between $200 and $300, although the final price would vary depending on wireless-carrier subsidies."

Samsung has released additional information on its long awaited Galaxy Tab.  Key information like price and availability in the US, of course, is missing.  However, the specs were released which are noted in their press release.  Key specs like a 1Ghz Cortex A8 processor, Android 2.2 (with Flash 10.1), 512MB RAM, 1024x600 capacitive screen (although Android 2.2 only officially supports resolution up to 854x480) and 16GB of internal memory are impressive.  But we want to see this in action.

Samsung Galaxy Tab NX100

The anticipation is building. The Apple IPad will soon have a new rival in the tablet market known simply as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. News out of Samsung today is that the Galaxy Tab NX100, which runs on Android 2.2 and has a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor and 16GB of memory, will be unveiled at the IFA European trade show in September. Pricing is still unavailable and technical specs are still hard to find but the Galaxy Tab, which is essentially a larger version of Samsung's Galaxy S phone, is rumored to sport a 7 inch Super AMOLED touch screen, expandable memory and some sort of interchangeable camera.
Now we know Wi-Fi will be included as everything has it these days, the question is 3G capability and is it exclusive to a particular carrier? Samsung seems to be thinking long term and exclusivity to a carrier may not seem like the way to go but only time will tell.

Samsung introducing its Galaxy Tab on Aug 11

Samsung is holding a press conference on August 11th at 11am EST to more than likely introduce their Galaxy Tab tablet PC.  Details have been leaking about the tablet: Android OS 2.2, 7" AMOLED screen, 16GB internal memory, 1.2 GHz A8 processor, will have dual cameras and will resemble Samsung's smartphone - Galaxy S.
